Although the students were hoping for a snow day, they are happy to be here - anxiously awaiting the end of the day so they can pass out their Valentine's cards and treats. Since it is so cold outside we decided to have inside recess today! The kids love playing different games, and of course having some free time on the computers. Today they are playing Apples to Apples jr, Shut the Box, and Chinese Checkers.
Where has this school year gone! We have certainly had a lot of fun this first part of the school year! I think everyone really enjoyed the Sound to Sea field trip. We have also enjoyed our Fire Safety Day and The Winter PTA Program! So far we have learned a lot about decimals in math. In Science we have learned about force, motion, energy, and the water cycle.
Since Starting the new year we have begun learning about Fractions. We have started reading Tuck Everlasting in Reading class. In Science we are working hard on our Science Fair projects!
Looking forward to what the New Year Holds for our class!
Our class has been enjoying all the fun that Read Across America Week holds. Today is Wacky Wednesday and we have been searching high and low for all the wacky things that are happening in our school! As a part of this special week our 5th grade class is going to read with Miss Williams' Kindergarten class! The students have picked some books that they have been practicing reading this morning. I cannot wait to hear them read to the younger children! I have heard some practicing their voices for the characters while other have told me they are thinking of questions to ask the children as they read to them! My favorite part so far is watching them practice holding the books so all can see the pictures! Hope you enjoy the photos from practice time.
It is so hard for me to believe how quickly this school year is passing by! We finally finished our Novel - "Among The Hidden" today! The students begged me to finish the book today. We were supposed to finish up tomorrow but they just couldn't take the suspense! Everyone is in <3 LOVE <3 with the book! I gave them a heads up as to what we will be reading in January. " The Watsons go To Birmingham: 1963" I Can't wait!!
The class has also been "Elfing" around a little bit! Each student created their own Elf Glyph by answering questions and decorating their elf according to the answers! They look amazing! We are in the process of "Elfing" the school! - Pictures to come!!
We started a new unit on force and motion this week! The students are super excited and seem to be enjoying the motion and design kit already! We have teamed up with Miss Simon's class for this unit as well! Today the children were given their first challenge, build a vehicle that could go at least 100 cm. They also had a time limit of 25 minutes. Their work was impressive to say the least!
It is hard to believe that October is half way over! I have been enjoying working with the children so much! We finished reading Island of the Blue Dolphins last week and the children did great on their AR test! We have been finishing up this week with an Author study and an Informational article about the discovery of the Lone Woman's cave on San Nicolas Island. In math we have begun multiplying with bigger numbers! Today we played a game of Scoot while practicing multiplication. Next up we will be multiplying decimals and then on to dividing!!
Our class is now the proud caregivers for a Giant Leopard Moth Caterpillar. One of the girls found it yesterday as we were coming in from recess. Since he was so different from the wolly bears we typically see they of course were very interested... They have named him Billy Bob Jr! So far, so good! Will try to keep everyone updated on how Jr. is doing! I have included a couple links to information on this type of moth on the science page!
This week we will continue reading Island of the Blue Dolphins. Through our reading we will be working on characterization and story maps. We will be working on vocabulary lesson 3 which I will add the words to Quizlet for the students to study. In Math, we will continue to work on decimals, focusing on adding and subtracting with decimals. In Science, we will be continuing our study of ecosystems. I am looking forward to another great week!! Don't forget that Tuesday night is Reading with Dad night. Any adult can attend with their child. We will be playing some Frog Games and also getting a chance to take AR tests. I will be giving out Homework Coupons to my students who attend.
Trying to figure this whole webpage thing out! Please bear with me as I work at making this a useful site for our classroom! Please check out the different pages as there are links to different sites that I think will be helpful for you and your children! and just for good measure I am trying to add a link to our favorite Sound to Sea song... Da Moose! Hope you enjoy!
